My Name is Prince, and I am Funky

by Traverse Legal, reviewed by Enrico Schaefer - June 28, 2007 - Chapter 1

THE PAST…Paul D. lived one floor over freshman year. I met him while I was rushing the Sigma Chi house. Paul D. had the biggest Cerwin Vega speakers you’d ever seen. And he’d play Prince, The Gap Band, Morris Day and the Time, Earth, Wind and Fire and anything else funky that you could think of.

Paul D. adopted me in those last few weeks of freshman year. We decided to become roommates. Well, that’s not exactly true. Paul was nice enough to invite me to become his roommate. Those Cerwin Vega speakers were about to become a huge part of my life. I was now on academic probation at the end of my first year of college. But I was starting to develop a sense of who I was. Whereas before I had never had any attitudes about anything, I was starting to take form. You might conclude that it was Paul D. who really gave me form. I prefer to think of it otherwise. I like to think that Paul D. and those big Cerwin Vega speakers were on my path. I spent the entire summer after freshman year listening to Prince Music and mowing lawns. My soul was starting to groove to the purple funk. My body was learning to dance, a form of expression which would become a staple for me as well.
