I was just getting my computer turned on this morning, and I found myself gazing at my Philips Speech Mike USB microphone. It got me thinking about some of my posts recently about how I know that I am really moving the ball when I am dictating a lot. And, as I waited for my computer to boot ,I recalled my early days at my last law firm. I had actually been out of the legal profession for about five years, I helped found an Internet start-up company in Boulder Co. But for a good about of the time I lived the meager life on about fifteen thousand dollars a year with myself and my wife and eventually my first son. We lived a life of minimalism and in many ways isolation. For several years I went without talking on the premise that I would not speak if it involved using the word "I" in any sentence. I hadn’t realized how little there is to say when you are not using the word "I".
So, when I put on a pair of dress shoes for the first time in five years and walked into my old law firm as an attorney with ten years of experience, but coming on as a new associate at a new associate salary, I had a hard time remembering how to dictate. My dictation skills had gone almost to zero. Boy have I come a long way. Here I sit blabbering into my Philips portable digital recorder generating content for this and other blogs. I send more audio files one way or another than I do any other single activity.
Yes, change and evolution are good. If we can’t adapt to our environment, we can hardly thrive in it.
