While the virtual law clerk program almost sounds as though it is not real because of its very title, the savings delivered to clients in cold hard cash are real indeed. I have been amazed to see the value that task based projects can deliver even in the legal arena. When every task is documented and bulleted and assigned and budgeted, it is amazing to see the level of efficiency and intense focus that is delivered.
Im beginning to believe that one of the primary drawbacks of the traditional hourly billing system is that it allows lawyers and their staff to simply meander within the context of a case or matter on behalf of a client. Without strong, tangible, and documented incentives to get the legal matter done within the documented and agreed budget, why would lawyers even think of such things and make them important?
