I always say that life is a dash of destiny, a dash of Karma and dash self-determination. Yes, we can impact our lives. But we can’t fight the stream which pushes us down towards the sea. We can swim upstream for a short while. We can swim from shoreline to shoreline. But life has a way of carrying us along irrespective of our personal wishes.
My personal stream takes me and those who have decided to be part of my life (my family, my workers, my friends) and those who simply are, well, part of my life. I spend most days trying to impact the behavior and business models of other law firms and lawyers. I have done so anonymously thus far. I did so for many reasons.
This blog has always been much bigger than the place I call home, as evidenced by its continued growth and popularity. For the last two+ years, I could have been the attorney down the street from you. I have shared my world with you. From the death of my father-in-law, the death of my grandmother, to my most honest view of what it means to work within the profession of law, I have been completely open. As things happen each day, I pick up my digital recorder and share my thoughts. It has been as therapeutic for me as, I hope, it has been entertaining and enlightening for you.
In a few days, I will no longer be anonymous. This reality TV show called The Greatest American Lawyer Blog will be … real. The people will be real people with real names. The most pressing issues will be discussed and real world examples given. I am just realizing that the people in my life will have to deal with the fact that I am a well-read blogger with a vast audience. The closer I get to Feb 10, the more I realize that being anonymous has never been about protecting me. It has been more about protecting the others in my life and world. My ideas have always had context. I guess they will now have real names as well.
It is my pledge to remain open and honest and real. The last I checked, I had 50,000 incoming links to this site. People come here because I tell it like it is each day, day in and day out. If I stop doing what has made this blog so popular -being honest – this blog will fade and die. My challenge is to make sure that in trying to be politically correct, I don’t lose what got me here. I pledge not top let the fact that that my neighbors will know it is me affect what or how I blog. I expect you to hold me to that promise.
I don’t know whether anyone would want to go for a swim in my stream of consciousness. But I guess that is what blogging is all about.
Towel anyone?
