The most challenging decision law firms make in an economic environment such as we are in now is whether or not to add or reduce staff. And by staff, I mean everything from the mailroom on up to the top partners. Being able to scale up and scale down on your workforce is critical for law firms during uncertain times. Will the economic downturn cause an increase in virtual staffing?

It is unclear whether or not law firms have division and technology in place to incorporate virtual workers into their business model. But one thing is for certain. With the layoffs that have already occurred, there is certainly plenty of competent staff, including lawyers, ready and able to work remotely on an as needed basis.
