I have a couple of areas that take up too much of my time. The first is computer support. I am looking for a resource that will be able to step in and manage some of my technology resources not only on my behalf, but on behalf of my staff. In 2005, when someo nes email was down, I was the only resource to fix it. That is a poor use of my time. Even if I have to pay someone sixty dollars to handle the problem for me.
Sometimes, I like to analogize the situation to one I experience on the home front all too often. My family needs me to take care of something at home. I have work obligations. We hire a baby-sitter at ten dollars an hour to cover for my time conflict. For my effective billing rate, I am still way ahead by keeping my focus at work.
2006 will be a year where we hire consultants and other people with specialized knowledge and talent to keep the "back-end" of our office humming. If you work in an environment where you wear many hats, I would encourage you to better define where your real value is to your firm. Delegate everything else, even if it costs you some money to do so.
