Becoming a Thought Leader, Showing off Your Expertise and Making Friends along the Way

Kevin O’Keefe from Lexblog has an interesting slide share presentation which he posted over at LinkedIn called “Online Thought Leadership for Lawyers-Blogs, Social Media and Twitter.” I would encourage any lawyer looking to better understand how the internet is revolutionizing the industry law from the individual lawyer’s perspective, should take a look at this presentation.  There are 59 slides that are easy to run through.  My favorite is the slide title “Blogs Are a Rotary Meeting” which really captures the essence of blogging.  By developing relationships with those within your areas of expertise, your blogging efforts allow you to become a leader within your chosen community.  The profound impact of the internet is that your audience can be located anywhere else in the world.

There are a bunch of marketing  slides which explain what Lexblog does in encouraging people to use Kevin’s services.  Kevin has always been a little schizophrenic as to whether or not he is selling search engine optimization or some sort of altruistic blogging tool with no marketing purpose.  I assume this is because Kevin is on the frontline battling the naysayers, some of whom still think that lawyers who advertise their services on the internet are somehow unethical.   Consumer information, as long as it is truthful, is never a bad thing for consumers.  The beauty of the internet is that any person or company with a legal problem can identify dozens of potential lawyers in just a minute by simply typing their problem into Google.  While the “status quo” legal interest would love to stop the tidal wave of legal information being provided for free on the internet, I say get out there and start blogging.  And while you’re at it, ask the reader to do business with you after showing off your expertise.  The “no time to blog” mantra which we have all heard over the last five years is yesterday’s news.  Besides, what better way is there to fulfill your pro bono obligation than to share expert information with thousands or tens of thousands of people who can use your blog to educate themselves.
